We
had a few Indian Summer days this past week. The chamber of
commerce days featured brilliant cobalt skies as a backdrop,
light winds and following seas. Bait
schools continue to move down the coast. Finding these potpourris
of bait is not difficult. Birds, dolphins and whitewater explosions
are sure signs to look for, as virtually every bait-frenzy has
them in it or over it. As a result of this bait, southwest Florida
beaches, passes and adjacent flats are teaming with Spanish
mackerel, jacks, bluefish, trout, ladyfish and pompano.
Can
it get any easier? Yes!
All
you need is one lure, a jig. “Special teams” lures like top-waters
and flies are keeping their prospective a-fish-ionados
content.
The same bait-filled areas over
seagrasses are producing decent action on small gag grouper
commonly known as “grass grouper”. Bag limits of “keeper”
grouper are being met by savvy anglers trolling or live chumming
over small rock piles inside of 25 feet.
If you can get the
right wind and tide, reds are being found on the edges of the
flats adjacent to deeper water on the first of the flood. Snook
are well embedded in their winter haunts and temperament. Juvenile
tarpon are obliging to our offers. Again, with the right weather,
attempts for “grand slams” (snook, redfish, trout, tarpon) can
be successful.
Behind the
scenes: we’ve been working on a Facebook and Twitter
presence. We’re really excited about doing live feeds from the
boat that will include real time reports, still shots and video
this spring. For those of you that are new to micro-blogging/social
sites, there is nothing to fear concerning your privacy. When
